Climbing Mount Pico
At 2,351 metres (7,713 ft), Mount Pico is the highest mountain in Portugal and the highest point of the Azores. Rising dramatically from Pico Island, it offers one of the most spectacular mountain experiences in the Atlantic.
There are two main options for climbing Mount Pico, depending on your experience, fitness, and how much time you want to spend on the mountain:
1. The standard route – a challenging but achievable climb that can be completed independently. The trail starts at the Mountain House (Casa da Montanha) and leads all the way to the summit. The ascent is steep and demanding, with volcanic terrain and a significant elevation gain. If you decided for this option you have register you and pay fee at website montanhapico.azores.gov.pt
2. A guided climb – You can join a certified local guide who will accompany you throughout the ascent. This is a good option if you have limited mountain experience or simply prefer to have professional guidance. We have a special discount code available exclusively for our guests (at website Tripix Azores use discount code DUASRIBEIRAS – how to use the code).
Whichever option you choose, reaching the summit of Mount Pico is a memorable experience, with breathtaking views across the surrounding islands and the Atlantic Ocean.
